Maverick Whiskey— owned by Kenneth Maverick, the fourth-great-grandson of Samuel Maverick, one of the more prominent figures in Texas independence and San Antonio history — has just released its grain-to-glass Samuel Maverick Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
Made from a mash of 72% corn grown right here in Texas, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley, their barrel proof is milled, mashed, and distilled all in-house at Maverick.
Aged at least two years in new charred White Oak barrels sourced from another Certified Texas Distillery, the Barrel Proof Bourbon Whiskey is hand-bottled at barrel proof 57% alcohol by volume or 114 proof. With notes of vanilla on the nose, the flavor hints at the same, with some notes of molasses mixed in, and a hint of spice on the back end.
The Maverick family has quite the history in Texas, with much of downtown San Antonio once belonging to the locally prominent family. Housed inside the historic Lockwood Bank Building at 115 Broadway, the three-story distillery sits on the corner of the prominent family’s original homestead, and once served as the headquarters to impeach Mayor Maury Maverick, grandson of Sam Maverick.
“We founded Maverick Whiskey in 2017 as a destination distillery in the heart of San Antonio adjacent to the Alamo as a way to celebrate our family and Texas heritage,” said Maverick “We hope to honor our family name with everything we do, and to give patrons a taste of what Texas truly is.”
Along with the debut of their Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Maverick is re-introducing its Texas Gin, with distribution into Texas. A truly Texas take on the traditional English spirit, Maverick Texas Dry Gin features local rosemary, pecans, bay laurel, Mexican mint marigold, and fresh Valley grapefruit zest, in addition to the traditional juniper berries. All this gives a sense of Texas summer sunsets while enjoying Maverick Gin in a gin martini.
Current Head Distiller Kevin Graham oversees production, with Matthew Arch handling the brewing duties on their one-barrel brewing system. Maverick is just as serious about providing quality handcrafted beers as with their spirits, Maverick said.
Maverick Whiskey includes an upstairs tasting room on the second floor complete with a Wild West saloon-style bar, offering thirsty patrons a view overlooking the distilling and brewing equipment while they enjoy whiskey, beer, and small bites from a limited food menu.
The bar serves beer, cocktails made with Maverick’s spirits, and a full food menu. The distillery’s third level hosts catering services and event space available for private functions.
Maverick’s kitchen serves up a high-end casual lunch and upscale dinner. Its menu principally focuses on South Texas fare infused with culinary influences from the Maverick’s family roots in Carolina and Alabama.
Maverick spirits are available onsite, as well as distributed to retail outlets around San Antonio and most of Texas. The Straight Bourbon Whiskey retails for $54.99, with the Texas Dry Gin clocking in at $44.99.
